When the BMW X1 was introduced in October 2009, the manufacturer wanted us to believe that it was taking the bold step of pioneering a new segment, that of the baby SUV crossover. In fact, what it provided us with was a baby BMW SUV that was in essence a premature replacement for the first-generation X3.

When the bigger, second-gen X3 came on stream in 2010, the X1 stood alone as the Munich manufacturer’s entry-level model in this area of the market.In many ways the X1 is a test of how small an SUV can be while being considered premium. BMW plays on the 1-series lineage – what with the ‘1’, and the fact that it’s even built on the same production line as the 1-series coupe and convertible in BMW’s plant in Leipzig.

The 1-series link is, however, a bit of a misnomer. The 3-series saloon also rolls down this production line and it’s the 3-series, rather than the 1-series, with which the X1 shares more in common.

However, to dismiss the X1 as a jacked-up 3-series would be wrong; this car had three years in development at a cost of millions. Since the X1 was launched, the soft-roader market has grown, so although it is meant to offer a more premium feel than Honda or Toyota’s soft-roaders, it is also in competition with the VW Tiguan, Audi Q3 and Range Rover Evoque.

BMW 135i Coupe

Although many were reluctant to embrace the 1 Series’ unique styling after it launched in 2004, the coupe bodystyle launched in 2007 boasted a broader appeal. The “startled cat” headlights and the rest of the 1 Series hatch’s front sheetmetal are applied to the coupe, but the bubble-topped roofline and truncated boot are unique and endearing features of the two door. It might look a tad top-heavy to some, but others could justifiably draw parallels between the 135i’s shape and the 1960s-vintage BMW 2002 – or indeed the first-gen E30 M3.

The 135i is bigger than both of them in width, length and height, however, and although it’s the smallest BMW on sale today, it’s spiritual ancestors were even smaller.

But while it might be small by modern standards, the 135i is no shrinking violet. An M Sports bodykit adds a touch of aggression front and rear, with a deeply-contoured front bumper and a sporty rear bumper with a blacked out diffuser-esque panel and a subtle bootlip spoiler. A flexible chin spoiler sits beneath the front bumper.

Aside from looking good, the front bumper is also a functional performance part. The cheek-vents funnel air behind the 135i’s front wheels, actively helping to cool the brakes, while the central aperture channels more air into the engine’s intercooler and radiator.

The metal window frames that are normally chromed on the 1 Series are finished in black chrome on the 135i, and are matched by a pair of black chrome exhaust outlets under the rear bumper.

The 135i’s Xenon headlamps are equipped with BMW’s circular daytime running lights, while the LED tail lights look fantastic when lit up at night.

The 18-inch alloy wheels are sized perfectly for the 135i’s wheelwells, and their staggered width and optimal offset give the small coupe a purposeful athletic stance.

There are a lot of smooth, flowing curves in the 1 series coupe’s sheetmetal. It’s a character-filled shape. It may be small and missing the outright athleticism of its bigger brother the M3, but the 135i has a more breezy personality that makes it easier to like.

A very highly tuned version of the same engine available in the X5 M, rated at 555 horsepower and enhanced with surprisingly good suspension setup.

Speaking of thrills, handling is surprisingly X5 sport sedan-like, although the size and bulk. Even in base form, rapid acceleration, but in all models, it does not mean fear - they mean fun. In the X5 M, the high-performance version of the X5, you have a track-ready SUV. It may not make sense, but once you drive one. Unfortunately, it costs roughly double the base X5.

In the X5, there is comfort to spare despite sporty handling. The quality is very good ride and acceptable way off-road. Similarly, the material is very good quality, with space for up to seven passengers, though the rear seat occupants require minor. Storage and cargo space, while not overwhelming, is more than enough.

Score in 2012 BMW X5 IIHS top marks of "good" in front and side impact crash tests. The NHTSA has not fully assessed X5 2012, but did not give it 4 out of 5 stars in the rollover resistance score. Standard safety equipment includes stability and traction control, a complete advanced airbags, all-wheel drive, X5 and stability inherent in a dynamic maneuver all improve safety as well.

As for entertainment and comfort features, the X5 has a long list of equipment available, including iDrive-based navigation and infotainment system, 10-way power adjustable front seats, push-button start, automatic climate control, parking distance sensors, HD radio, and iPod connectivity plus USB and more.

What it is: The most powerful 6-series, sharing its underpinnings with the next M5; coupe and convertible versions will be offered.

Why it matters: It’s as close as BMW gets to a muscle car.

Platform: A two-door version of the 5-series sedan’s F10 platform, dubbed F12.
